In first grade, several strategies are introduced in each Module of EngageNY. These strategies are repeatedly practiced in our daily classwork and homework in order to develop flexible thinking for our students. "Finding the answer" isn't always our goal. We want the students to be proficient in several strategies prior to moving on to the next Module. While some of these strategies seem "silly" when working with single digit numbers they become valuable when the student works with double digit addition and subtraction.
So, I am asking you to hang in there with us. I know we all learned math a different way. Common Core has changed everything. In order to meet the standards it is important that the children understand and use the strategies being taught in class. Thanks you for your support.
